About our Blog
Over time, women have become minimized and even
forgotten in Peruvian history, as well as in other societies around the world.
The reasons for this are related to their own situation and epoch. Among its
main causes, there is the imposed domination of men towards women, which means
that women were confined to dedicate themselves to material and domestic
activities. Thousands of years ago, the Andean woman had an important role
within her town, in which she was in charge of agriculture. They were known for
being textile experts and healers since they had high knowledge of the human
body and nature.
In the 15th century, women carried out agricultural
work, such as sowing, cultivation, harvesting, selection and conservation of
seeds, in addition to caring for the animals. These activities were considered
obligatory for them, and no one could go against these customs. Even though they
performed daily activities that helped the growth of the society, history has
not given them the importance that they deserve.
With the arrival of Spaniards in Peru, and hence
the cultural mix originated, women began to have a single role: the care of
children and domestic tasks within their homes. Only in the cases of women with
direct descendants of the Inca protected by Spanish families, or women related
to conquerors had access to the teaching of reading, morality, and they could
involve themselves in economic matters if allowed by their husbands. Later on,
both women and men, tired of being oppressed, began their fight for their
liberation, and women had an important role during these events. Many women participated
actively in the multiple fights that achieved the independence, even more, they
were also the first ones on start the uprising in different cities around the
country.
During the foundation of States and Nations, women
managed to achieve their independence slowly and with difficulty. Also, they
have modified, according to the epoch, the concept of femininity where both men
and women have to claim and spread the contributions of women throughout
history. But first, we need to understand what happened according to the
time in Peru? What have been the contributions of women throughout our history?
Has the role of women been important according to each great historical event? What impact has their actions had on
the construction of our current society?
Our purpose in this blog is to highlight the role
of Peruvian women by identifying their contributions to the development of the
society over time, coming from pre-Inca times to Republican Peru. We will
recount the most important chapters of the time, emphasizing the feminine
contributions and associating them with what we perceive today under an
independent Peru. Our objective will be to recount events, but not to take an
ideology or political position, nor will it be to leave aside or disparage male
involvement. The contributions of both genders have been crucial throughout
history regardless of their work. They have helped to develop our nation. That
is why we need to exalt the female role that has succumbed to the hardships of
history.
