SUPPLEMENTARY PODCAST: "WOMEN AND INDEPENDENCE IN PERU”

"Women and Independence in Peru” by Catherine Davies

In the attached podcast it is discussed how the contribution of women to the independence of Peru was very important so that it can be carried out in a short period of time, since without their support, the process would have been longer. There were contributions of all kinds, military, health, and economic by women. A clear example is Francisca Zubiaga de Gamarra, who commanded troops in upper Peru and governed with her husband. However, we can see how after independence, the leading role of women was overshadowed by gender inequality and the superiority of men. The history of women returned recently in the 21st century, with the publication of Elvira Garcia, an important woman who published Peruvian women through the centuries. Throughout the podcast, specific parts of independence where women were very supportive are also discussed, such as when San Martin asked for the help of anyone who wanted to serve the country from the heart, and more than 200 women showed up.
